Officers of the British government will be not capable to stop sportspersons importing steroids to the UK, when they come to participate in the 2012 Olympic Games. Although intake of steroids is forbidden in sports, self-administration of these preparations is not illegal in the UK. Just distribution of steroids is claimed to be illegal in this country. Thus, if anybody wants to import quantity of anabolic steroids which is essentially large, he/she will not be permitted to do it.
Before Olympic Games took place in Australia, Canada and China, governments of these countries modified legislation linked with import and intake of steroids at least temporally. But the British government refuses to change steroid laws for the 2012 Olympics.
Ironically, while the British government doesn’t want to make personal usage of steroids illegal, Britain sportspersons are banned for lifetime, if they administer anabolic steroids. When it comes to the WADA Code, sportspersons that take forbidden drugs are banned for two years.
The Olympic minister Hugh Robertson notes that it is needed to have a universal policy related to sentencing. He insists on at least 4 years or even longer. Although he is supported by the British Olympic Association, the UK Anti-Doping Agency doesn’t agree with such harsh punishment. Andy Parkinson, the CEO of the UK Anti-Doping Agency, considers that certain sanctions must be milder.
The Olympic minister acknowledges that there are different opinions in sports and it’s not well but he doesn’t ask the CEO of the UKAD to resign.
The spokesman for the minister has noticed that any athlete can have steroids in his/her luggage, when he/she comes to London. But the quantity of steroids should display that he/she possesses them only for self-administration. The spokesman has noticed that it is not criminal for a sportsperson to apply steroids under laws of the UK but if any sportsperson is caught taking banned medicines, he/she will be punished under anti-doping laws.
The UKAD noted that they would cooperate with border control officers. Information about sportspersons will be utilized by anti-doping agencies.
5, 000 drug test, including 1, 000 blood tests will be conducted by the International Olympic Committee.
