Georges Laraque wrote his autobiography in a book “The story of the NHL’s unlikeliest tough guy”. The author wanted to tell about his life to others. Georges Laraque mentioned also about administration of anabolic steroids in the National Hockey League (NHL). These references about intake of steroids by the NHL’s players seemed to be quite interesting. The Canadian press published just the quotes connected with this endless subject. The rest of the book was neglected.
Georges Laraque told in an interview that he had never taken performance-enhancing drugs. Furthermore, the author said that he hadn’t mentioned any names of the athletes that had taken steroids. The book is indeed about life of the author.
George Laraque mentions about certain ways in order to determine whether a hockey player utilizes steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs or not. Here are 2 ways noticed by him:
1. A hockey player who gains more than 40 pounds in a short period of time must be utilizing performance-enhancing drugs.
2. A hockey player that reduces his weight significantly in short period of time in order to correspond to the rules of the Winter Olympics must be utilizing performance-enhancing drugs.
Of course, all sportsmen, including hockey players, know that they will be tested for steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs by the World Anti-Doping Agency. That’s why they stop utilizing the banned preparations certain time before the Olympics. It helps them to escape from risk of testing positive for these medicines.
But this is not the chief idea of the book. George Laraque wanted to show that a child has to put incredible efforts to become a famous professional athlete in spite of racial intolerance and bullying. But the media doesn’t pay attention on this aspect. The media is always ready to publish stories linked with administration of steroids by sportsmen.
George Laraque didn’t have a goal to to make public the names of the hockey players who utilized steroids.
Of course, the media asks the author to mention the names of the NHL’s players that use steroids.
